John 20:19-31

The Rev. Anne Cohen will be our guest preacher again this Sunday. She will be preaching from the text known as the story of doubting Thomas. You might remember that guest preacher Jolene Cadenbach preached on this text for our pulpit swap on the Sunday the week after Easter. Rev. Cohen will be approaching the text from another perspective this Sunday and you will have the benefit of experiencing how different meanings can be gleaned from the same biblical text in a sermon entitled "Beyond the Shadow: The Creed of a Modern Thomas - An Internal Dialogue Externalized."  Come and enjoy worship which will also include our Bell Choir this Sunday. After worship and fellowship time Bharathi Kamalakar will be sharing her faith journey in our Adult Forum hour from 11:30-12:30. Light refreshments will be served and childcare is available in our church nursery. Bharathi is from India and is here in Pasadena with her husband for a few years and is affiliated with Fuller Seminary.

This Sunday we celebrate Creation Sunday - a time to reflect on our stewardship of the Earth and all that God has given to us in our environment.  The text is 1 Peter 2:1-10 - a letter to an early Christian community that reminds those followers of how their faith is nurtured by their dependence on God and how they themselves are considered a holy people.  In a sermon entitled "It Begins With Us", we will look at the human cost of ignoring our natural environment and continuing to consume in our country without heeding the consequences for God's Creation.  We will also consider what we can do as individuals and as a church to be responsible stewards of what God has given us.  Come and join us for worship at 10AM in the Chapel!

Greeters this week are: Ken & Beth Biery
Usher scheduled are: Sandy Biehler, Lurline Brown, Angie Schnapp, and Mel Smith.
Acolyte is: Sandy Grant
Church School Teachers are: Kim Story, Krysty Leckrone, and Roberta White

On Saturday April 19th the Rummage Sale will be open from 8AM until 12 noon in Mayflower Hall, on the basement level of the church.  Come and shop, then stay and help clean up if you are able - many thanks to all who have helped with the sale this year, and to our coordinator Sue Miele.  The proceeds of the sale go toward the budget of our church and its ministry.  Also on Saturday, from 9AM until 12 noon, volunteers are invited to help at the LA Food Bank.  Those interested in helping should contact Josh Ashenmiller, Chair of Discipleship, and plan to meet at 8:30AM in the Walnut street church parking lot to carpool to the food bank.

After worship on Sunday April 20th we are holding our Spring Boutique in the parlors from 11:30AM to 1PM.  Grace Rinck has organized a wonderful celebration and fundraiser for the church with food and an amazing silent auction with lots of attractive gifts - just in time for Mother's Day!  Come and bid, enjoy the company of church friends and help us raise money for the work of our church! At 4PM there will be a yoga class at church - contact Marlene Pomeroy if you are interested in attending and have not come to a class before.

John 10:1-10

Our scripture this Sunday focuses on a passage from John's Gospel that uses the imagery of sheep and shepherding. While we don't live in a pastoral or nomadic area, we learn again how the themes in scripture transcend time and culture. In a sermon entitled "Voice Recognition Patterning," the Rev. Anne Cohen will speak to this text and its relevance to our life today.  Rev. Cohen is a member of our conggregation and will be the Interim Pastor at the First Congregational Church of Glendale (UCC) beginning in early May. We welcome Rev. Cohen to our pulpit this Sunday! A layperson-led Bible study takes place every Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in our Library. Childcare is available starting at 9:00 a.m. in our church nursery. Hope to see you Sunday!

Our text in worship this week is Luke 24:13-35 - the story of two disciples who recognize the Risen Christ in the breaking of bread together.  We are asked to notice some important connections by the writers of Luke's gospel in this story.  Jesus is walking away from Jerusalem toward Emmaus - a sign that the gospel is to be shared outside the Temple community, with gentiles and strangers alike.  Also, Jesus is careful to frame his story within the larger story of the Hebrew prophets - a sign that the Jesus movement is not replacing Judaism, but completing an important Messianic hope within Judaism - Jews of the time are invited to participate in this movement, too.  Finally, Jesus is revealed in the breaking of bread - a ritual re-enactment of the Last Supper - a sign that the gospel comes alive in communities that practice hospitality and re-experience the connection between Jesus and his followers through communion.  In a reflection entitled "Gaining Recognition" we will explore practices that allow us to "see differently" with our faith.  Come and join us for worship at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel!
